Jason Miles is Hugh McDonald in Captain Crash, bringing three decades of bass experience and an undeniable groove to the band’s sound. His journey began in the ’90s playing in church, where he discovered the foundation that still defines his playing today. Inspired by gospel greats like Fred Hammond and bass legend Andrew Gouché, Jason learned early on how to lock into the pocket with both power and sensitivity.
From there, his influences stretched wide. Bootsy Collins taught him to bring personality and funk to every note. Prince, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder showed him how music could be soulful, playful, and larger than life. Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers proved that bass could be aggressive, melodic, and funky all at once, while bands like No Doubt and Queen fueled his love for performance and blending styles. Even Metallica left its mark, reminding him that music should hit hard and leave a lasting impact. This mix of gospel roots, funk groove, soulful expression, and rock energy continues to shape his style today.
Over the years, Jason has played in multiple bands that allowed him to explore everything from funk and soul to rock and gospel. At one point he was offered the chance to tour, but he made the choice to put family first. That decision shaped him not just as a musician, but as a person, teaching him that balance is as important as ambition. After taking about a decade away from live performance, Jason reconnected with his roots at LCBC Church, supporting on bass and rediscovering his passion for music. It was there he connected with Shawn, Captain Crash’s lead singer, over their shared love of motorcycles and music. That bond led to his joining the band in 2025.
For Jason, being part of Captain Crash isn’t just about playing shows, it’s about holding the foundation steady and creating something bigger than himself. Fans can expect him to bring energy, soul, and consistency every time the band hits the stage.
At the end of the day, my goal is to make people feel the music as much as they hear it.
